Challenges for Ufc Champion Anderson Silva are a Weight Class Above

UFC 78 is quickly approaching and it's main event match-up between Rashad Evans and Michael Bisping made me think about fighters who could cut weight to drop to a lower weight class. In that spirit I am going to discuss four UFC fighters who might be well served by dropping weight and fighting below their current class.



Let me start at the top, the UFC heavyweight division. There are a couple of UFC heavyweights who could make 205lbs, remember Randy Couture fought as a light heavyweight for a while, he even held the light heavyweight title. There is really only one UFC heavyweight who I want to talk about dropping weight. Brandon "The Truth" Vera just dropped a three round decision to former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia. Brandon didn't loose this match because of his skill-set. He lost because of Tim's size. Tim pushed Vera up against the fence and used his weight to close the distance, essentially negating Vera's superior kicking game. If Brandon Vera dropped down to 205lbs I feel he would be competing on an even playing field and would likely quickly move into title contention.



The UFC light heavyweight division has the majority of guys who should consider dropping weight. There are three that I'd like to discuss, they are Rashad Evans, Michael Bisping and Dan Henderson. You'll note that Bisping and Evans are the main event fighters at UFC 78. Both of these fighters are undefeated at light heavyweight.



Michael Bisping is an outstanding fighter, a good striker with an adequate ground game. However, his recent fight with Matt Hamill shows that he can be manhandled by a stronger opponent. Bisping mostly stayed on the outside in this fight and let Hamill control the action. I believe that this is because he was staying away from Hamill's strength...with is wrestling, and physical strength. We all remember on the Ultimate Fighter when Hamill was overwhelming the other fighters with his physical strength, a move to 185lbs would not only put him into title contention, but would allow Bisping to be stronger than other opponents in that weight class.



Rashad Evans has already dropped a weight class. Rashad competed at heavyweight on the Ultimate Fighter TV series and did very well, winning his division, but his recent bout with Tito Ortiz showed that Rashad, despite his superior wrestling skills is a small light heavyweight. Rashad will have no problems matching strength with Bisping at UFC 78, but when fighting the larger light heavyweights like Forrest Griffin, Wanderlei Silva and Tito Ortiz he will get manhandled, essentially negating his wrestling advantage. A move to 185lbs would likely make Rashad an immediate title contender.



Dan Henderson has already fought at 185lbs and is the current, and likely last, PrideFC 185lb champion. Dan is strong, even for a 205lb fighter and Dan probably has the best wrestling in the UFC. Dan's last fight with Quinton Jackson showed that he can have trouble with a guy who is a good wrestler, a good striker and is as physically strong as he is. There simply isn't a fighter at 185lbs with Dan's strength. With a decisive strength advantage, Dan's heavy hands and fantastic wrestling would take him not only into title contention, but in my eyes he would defeat Anderson Silva.



The UFC 185lb division is probably it's weakest. With a dominant champion and everyone else way below there are seemingly no challengers, but just above at 205lbs there are a bunch of small light heavyweight fighters who might want to consider transitioning to 185lbs.

Each team in the NHL plays 82 regular season games, 41 games at home and 41 on the road. Teams used to play all other teams in the league at least once, but this will no longer be the case following implementation of post-lockout changes. Teams will now play 10 inter-conference (that is, not in their own conference) games throughout the entire season, 1 game against each team in two of the three divisions in the opposite conference. Teams will also play 40 games against non-divisional, conference opponents (4 games against each), and 32 games within their division (8 games against each). Two points are awarded for wins, one point for losing in overtime or a shootout, and zero points for a loss in regulation time. At the end of the regular season, the team that finishes with the most points in each division is crowned the division champion. Each Conference consists of three divisions, so these three division champions and five more teams fill out each Conference's playoff field. In total, 16 teams (3 division champions and 5 additional teams, for a total of 8 from each Conference) qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.



The Stanley Cup Playoffs is an elimination tournament, where two teams battle to win a best-of-seven series in order to advance to the next round. If the score is tied at the end of the third period an overtime period is played. If the score is tied at the end of an overtime period, additional overtime periods are played until a winner is determined. Overtimes are also full periods of twenty minutes (of five-on-five hockey), rather than the five minutes (of four-on-four hockey, followed by a shootout,) in the regular season. The overtime is played with golden goal rule (sudden death) so the game ends as soon as either team scores a goal. The higher-ranked team is said to be the team with the home-ice advantage. Four of the seven games are played at this team's home venue - the first and second, and, where necessary, the fifth and seventh, with the other games played at the lower-ranked team's home venue.



One playoff that was contested in the NHL used the following format: the division winners were seeded one through three, and then the next five teams with the best records in the conference were seeded four through eight. However, the league has yet to announce the playoff format for the 2005-06 seasons, and with the new scheduling format that emphasizes division play, the league is reportedly exploring placing greater emphasis on division standings by taking the top 2 teams in each division, along with the teams with the next two best records for each Conference's playoff field. In the event of a tie in points in the standings, ties are broken first by amount of wins, and then by record against the team that is tied (disregarding the first game played at the arena of the team that hosted more games than the other during the season series, if applicable). Next, the tied team with the better positive differential between goals scored for and against is given preference, and in the rare circumstance these tiebreakers are insufficient, the Commissioner has the authority to devise some other means of breaking the tie. The first round of the playoffs, or Conference Quarterfinals, consists of the first seed playing the eighth seed, the second playing the seventh, third playing the sixth, and the fourth playing the fifth. In the Conference Semifinals, the top remaining Conference seed plays against the fourth remaining seed, and the second remaining seed plays the third remaining seed. In the next round, the Conference Finals, the two remaining teams in each conference play each other, with the Conference champions proceeding to the Stanley Cup Finals.

I think EA is his best version of FIFA again. At least this is definitely the best version of the next generation of consoles. The game is much better and more realistic than previous versions. My only beef with the actual game is that sometimes players are not very intelligent or started early, when in attack, but sometimes players at the end from the defensive position, because it seems to draw on something that I can not understand. In all honesty, although this does not happen very often and may be a little "tactics by the custom. By the way, the ability to adjust tactics and formations (which, to be honest, is available in previous versions), not to this game really fun. 

There are tons of reviews, so I'll briefly - the gameplay, customization, realism, tons of teams and leagues, and graphics are all great. Only negative, the lack of proper stadiums, some players do not look like themselves (and this was corrected in the sounds of World Cup 10), and the image of the masses could be better, and sometimes have some weird AI stuff. In general, though, probably the best FIFA yet and I'm excited for the 11th FIFA

Apparently Soccer Can Get Pretty Big

Who doesn't like to score goals? I've never seen anyone do it on TV and not be pretty happy about it (shirts may or may not come off, everybody's shouting, its like a miniature Mardi Gras every time). Fifa '10 brings you as close to the back of the twine as you'll ever get from your couch. After all, you did just pull a slick spin move on Demichelis leading up to a thru pass that turned Sergio Ramos to stone in order to get there. And you can get the perfect angle for the instant replay to show friends your mad skills. You'll love this game, just try not to get rug burn doing your celebratory slide.

EA DOMINATES THE GAMING WORLD IN SPORTS GAMES

Just wanted to add my two cents in for once about EA and thier FIFA legacy. I have been an EA fanatic since 1995, bought every sports game they came out with since then, I love the games and there is no doubt that thier sports games are the best on the market hands down. I have become a FIFA fanatic and just think thier games get better and better every year, but what I am hoping is that one day they will go a little further with the crowd celebrations and add some stunning effects especially with the derby games, it would just make it so much more better. I think everyone would agree, but overall the game deserves five stars in my opinion and no doubt in my mind the next one will also.

FIFA 2010 - What a buggy let down

After playing Fifa on the PC and consoles since '96, I finally decided to get Fifa 2010. The main point of it was I heard that the 360 Degree control made for a much better game. In summary I would say if you are thinking of upgrading to Fifa 10, don't. Also I won't be buying another Fifa game unless I hear that all these stupid issues are cleared up. 

At first I was impressed with the PS3 version. The new controls are great, making for a much better runnign game. The "Be A Pro" is also much easier to get into than before. Also the players look really great, very lifelike. 

However, after a few days playing, I started to see some seriously annoying bugs; 
- There are only a select number of stadia to start with. Whereas we used to be able to play at home grounds, now we just get generic stadia. 
- There are many many bugs; 
-In the "Be A Pro" you are rated by the way you play, and sometimes the ratings just make no sense. You can make a good pass to a man in a good position, but if he is tackled on the ball, you are penalised. If you call for the ball, and don't receive it, you are penalised. 
-The referee has no idea what to do or what offside is, and that is not because referees are "realistic", it is the game that has made the rules for offside incorrect. Once I had three players burst into space on a counter attack. I dribbled and then passed to the open man - OFFSIDE! 
-I once deliberatly tackled a player from behind when they were clean through on goal; free kick, no card. Later Two players go up for a header in the middle of the pitch, one player receives a yellow card. I can only assume there is a "randomiser" code in there to make refs lose their head. 
- The commentary is LAZY! If the are not talking total rubbish, eg: "What a slow game..." in a 7-0 thrashing, then Fifa are using recycled commentary from Fifa 07 like "17 years since Liverpool have won a trophy." It is also rediculously repetitive. If you have a favourite team, be prepared to listen to the same set of 2 or 3 sayings whenever they play at home. 
- The instructions, as usual, are so light on, half the time it is impossible to figure out why certain things are happening, or what things mean, eg: the Be a Pro attributes, in game and otherwise, or how to set up set pieces. 
- I can't seem to direct my shots. There are no clear instructions, and the only thing that seems to matter is if the player is running in a particular direction. 
- What the hell happened to the crowd? At least in Fifa 99 you could get the crowd reacting to what happened on the pitch. For the most part the sound in Fifa 10 is stunned silence.

Fifa10 Manager Mode sucks

Fifa 10 The Manager Mode really sucks, every time I play it freezes when the season transferences is loading!!!! It's ridiculous! 
Also during gameplay on a match, it freezes... I noticed this started happening after the latests PS3 system updates... 

EA should be worried about fixing all this issues before releasing a product.

The Greatest soccer game yet!

For anyone whose played any FIFA game in the past, you can expect this game to provide endless hours of intense fun and competition. There are a few changes, however...all for the best. The players have full 360 degree control, whereas in past FIFA games a player can only move up, down, left, right, and diagonally in each respective direction. The dribbling system for tricks has been improved and works great! 

My only flaw is it seems the computer rarely gets any foul called, yet when I'm playing, I get called on for many more things, even when I reach the ball first. Maybe they did it to speed up the game so it wouldn't stop so often because of fouls, but it's very one-sided, almost as if the refs were programmed to favor the CPU. That's really the only flaw I have. The goalies are a lot smarter, the shooting is simple but not limited, and the pace of the game seems perfect to me. The graphics are really good, and the soundtrack is different but fits the game rather well (minus a few annoying tracks). 

Overall, I give this game a 9/10 simply because of the way the fouls are called to CLEARLY favor the CPU. there's always room for improvement, but I like FIFA 10 much better than FIFA 09.

The revelation came to me as I sat in the theatre, watching the renewed version of “Empires Strikes Back.” It was my favorite scene, where Luke Skywalker, under the watchful eye of Yoda, tries to will his spaceship out of the swamp and can’t do it, then gets frustrated and tries to walk away.

Yoda’s response is:

“Always with you it cannot be done! Hear you nothing that I say? Try not! Or do not! There is no try! Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size do you? And well you should not! For my ally is the Force. And a powerful ally it is. Life greets it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we. Not this crude matter! You must feel the force around you.”

Then Yoda, to prove his point, telepathically pulls the ship out of the water.

Luke says, “I don’t believe it!”

Yoda: “That is why you fail.”

That’s when I got it – the meaning of life. The Force is inside each of us. It is what we do individually. Some call it God, but whatever it is – we each hold the key. While the free world, as Jedi knights, may be at war to combat the evil Empire, we can make a difference in changing the world with our own attitudes and actions.

Like Luke, when things get tough, we tend to make excuses for ourselves. It’s very easy to do. The message Yoda sends is that we determine our own success and we do it through perseverance.

When you chose your career, did all of a sudden, people start to throw money at you? Were you an overnight success? Chances are it took time to build a clientele. Sometimes you had to do that while working another job. Even after several years, it’s still a struggle. You wonder if it’s worth it.

Professional sports provides many inspirational stories, one of which transpired during the 2001-02 National Hockey League season. Montreal center Saku Koivu announced early September that he was diagnosed with cancer. It was at the time of the Team Canada evaluation camp, where Mario Lemieux, who had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease several years prior, held a press conference, along with one of Koivu’s closest friends Mark Recci, in support of the Montreal player’s challenging days ahead. Lemieux said that a positive attitude had everything to do with his own recovery and that he believed the mind could cure disease. After long and extensive treatment, Koivu beat the odds and returned to the Habs lineup for their last three games, playing a leading role in all 12 playoff games. He’s been playing ever since.

Koivu could have given up. His determination to get back into the NHL is what drove him to recovery.

Attitude is everything. A positive belief in yourself can help determine your outcome. Everyone has problems, personal challenges and issues that interfere with their end goal. Nobody is immune. How you deal with adversity is what determines the outcome. At least that’s the message from Mario Lemieux.

Quarterback Joe Montana had the ability to dissect the opposition with precision passing to lead his team to victory in the final minutes of a game after his team had fallen behind. He could see where the receiver was open and pinpoint the ball to where the defender couldn’t reach it.

Broadcaster and former National Football League coach John Madden described Montana, “He had so much confidence, he knew he was going to do it. His teammates knew he was going to do it. He had so much confidence, the fans knew he was going to do it. You know when it’s the ultimate confidence when the opposition knows he was going to do it.”

Minnesota Vikings running back sensation Adrian Peterson sees the end zone every time he touches the ball.

In taking a lesson from professional athletes and Yoda in “Empires Strikes Back,” visualizing success and a positive attitude seems to work.

Star Wars aside, Saku Koivu is living proof that perseverance can beat any odds to achieve success.
