How To Become an Automotive Technician

Automotive service technicians inspect, maintain, and repair automobiles and light trucks that run on gasoline, electricity, or alternative fuels such as ethanol. Automotive service technicians and mechanics responsibilities have evolved from simple mechanical repairs to high-level technology-related work. The increasing sophistication of automobiles requires workers who can use computerized shop equipment and work with electronic components while maintaining their skills with traditional handtools. As a result, automotive service workers are now usually called technicians rather than mechanics. ASE certification has become a standard credential for automotive service technicians. While not mandatory for work in automotive service, certification is common for all non entry-level technicians in large, urban areas.

  2. There is a Surplus of Mechanics out there. There's always a Call for more Mechanics, because, the Trade is so absolutely CRAP that there's a Revolving Door at 90% of the Shops out there. The Average amount of time any mechanic stays at a shop is 2 years. Why? Because it's a horrible Industry run by Greedy Shop Owners. These Schools just want your money, they don't care if you end up at Jiffy Lube. If you're young, smart, got potential, get away from this Trade. It will leave you broke

  5. @ELGALLO650 - I would consider the more affordable (and sometimes more regulated) county vo-tech school or community college as long as the program is accredited within the industry. Just fy that some people have said that the job field isn't supposed to be that great for automotive service technicians. Best of luck regardless of which path that you take :)
