A test roll of Kodak's newly-announced Ektachrome 100D. Shot using a Beaulieu 3008S. Unfortunately, there is some jitter being caused by this camera, and focusing was off as well. All external scenes were manually exposed using a neutral density filter to rate the film at 25 ASA. The indoor shots were taken with a Canon 310XL, no color correction (80A) filter was used (to take advantage of the 100 ASA rating). Lighting was provided by four 100W fluorescent bulbs each with a 5500 temperature rating, along with a halogen bulb for the background. In retrospect, I wish I had used my Canon 814 Auto Zoom Electronic, but it's in the shop. I think the camera's built in auto exposure would have done a better job at averaging each scene's exposure than I did. I exposed it by selecting the brightest point, then a mid-range value, but I think this system, while ensuring no blown highlights, left the blacks "in the dark" so to speak. Apologies for the not-so-stellar telecine. I am having major equipment issues, which is another way of saying I need an upgrade!. More testing to follow this weekend in NYC (without the Beaulieu). @MREVANURY @MREVANURY I used a Spotmtr for this shot and avg'd the diff between the face of the bridge and the not-so-dark areas around the trees. I also had a 2 stop ND filter in place and set the ASA on the meter to 25ASA. I use the 1/50th setting on my meter since it's designated for 24fps Cine even though my Beaulieu is 1/60th at 24 fps. Initially I thought this came out horrible but after re-telecining I noticed it was the best exposed 100D I've had so far. Did not use auto-exp:broken..thx!
ReplyDeleteThe opening shot with the Beaulieu is absolutely perfectly exposed and color balanced! I was beginning to give up on the Beaulieu which would have sucked because I just bought one. Haven't a chance to shoot any footage yet. Did you use the auto iris to take that opening shot? Concerned about the Beaulieu's shutter speed difference as compared to other cameras. I strictly shoot manually so I use a light meter. But the cine marks don't line up with the shutter speed at 24fps.Any advice?
ReplyDelete@x05e Thank you very much, I'm definitely going to get a few of those. did you put them inside china balls or anything like that?
ReplyDelete@Jmlexus Yes, look for EcoSmart 27 Watt (100W) Daylight at home depot.
ReplyDelete@x05e Oh I see, that's awesome. do you have anymore information about the bulbs? i'd like to get a hold of some.
ReplyDelete@Jmlexus Thanks! I did not use an 80A (or any filter) for the indoor shots. I merely used 27 watt spiral fluorescent bulbs that output 100watt
ReplyDeletedaylight 5500 Kelvin, thereby imitating daylight. In this way I was able to use the 310XL at 100ASA and did not need to alter or fool the lightmeter in any way. You are correct it does not meter through the lens, only through the top "piper", but it actually worked quite nicely.
your film looks great! I've been using a Eumig viennette 8 camera, but have been looking for a reasonably priced canon 310xl for a while. I see you used an 80a filter for indoors, but did you need to adjust/trick the meter since (i believe) the camera does not meter through it's lens?
