The closest thing I can think of is not really online, but The Sims2, or Sims 3. However there are some things in the game that Im not sure are appropriate for a 12 year old to do/see. You don't have to pay for online things unless you want to download extra stuff, but the game is great enough without the downloaded items. You make your own person who goes through life, has to get a job to earn money to support themselves, buy items etc.
