What are the "tea party" references in the news referring to?

Question by annaBell91: What are the "tea party" references in the news referring to?
I'm going to sound stupid for asking this, but... When the news talks about the "tea party" debates and such, what do they mean?

I've heard about the Boston tea party but don't remember much about that since elementary :(

I just want a simple explanation of these things, nothing too complex. thanks!

  1. The name is based on the Boston tea party as it protested unfair taxation without representation. You'll have to look up the tea party manifesto for an exact answer, but, in general, they consist mostly of fiscal conservatives who feel the political elite of both parties are not listening to them anymore (not that they ever did, but the bailouts, tarp, and obamacare pushed them too far).
