Cisco Inexpensive VOIP solution for newbs?

Question by Mike S: Cisco Inexpensive VOIP solution for newbs?
I'm getting a Cisco 1701 which I know supports VOIP and considering a 2621XM to learn. I know both can do PBX (am I right?). I'd like to use a VOIP phone (or two) and use a land line. Also, I plan to set up a point to point connection to peer wanting to do similar. If I wanted to set up voice over land line what do I need to do, and cheaper method is best. I've heard of DID and FXS. DID is more expensive, the cards I've found. What interface cards would I need to accomplish inbound and outbound calling for as cheap (within a 100 range) as possible but functional.

Also, say I didn't use a land line though defeat a big purpose, can I still set up two Cisco IP phones linked? Do I need Call Manager Express, is there a cheaper solution like computer based software?

I'm confused on logistics and how I could go about this. If anyone could provide info, it would be great!

in order to accomplish this you are going to have to have some sort of PBX system. I have been running Trixbox (a flavor of Asterisk) for several years now. Do a search for "Trixbox" formerly known as asterisk @ home. you can DL a distro and install on an older PC you probably have laying around, and then have your phones register to the Trixbox server. Mine runs CentOS )so if you have linux experience it would help) but after installation it is a web based configuration. Pretty easy to figure out.
