I bought a PS3 (the 80 GB version) yesterday thinking it would play my PS2 games. Sadly, that is not the case, only the older 80 GB and 60 GB models are fully backwards compatible (the can play PS AND PS2 games). What to look for to ensure FULL backwards compatibility. 80 GB Version: Number of USB Ports: 4 Letters After Dash in the Serial Number: CECHE 60 GB Version: Number of USB Ports: 4 Letters After Dash in the Serial Number: CECHC or CECHA *Now the thing is, Sony stopped production on these models, so you will not find them at retail stores, your best bet would be to look online. UPDATE: Hey guys, let me clear something up about the "PS2 System Data" download. It will not make a PS3 that is not PS2 compatible, compatible. This download is for PS2 games that use the PS2's hard disk, it will allow theses particular PS2 games (such as Final Fantasy XI Online) to use the PS3's hard disk.

ReplyDelete@UberStarFkr Really, where did you find this out? This is very good to know, and I appreciate you posting this. Do you think Sony will release this "emulation update" via a firmware update?
ReplyDelete@jeremyiaw broken ass tv's FTW (i have one too ^_^)
ReplyDeleteFor the author of this video. You are half way correct. The first 60 Gig Model had the actual PS2 hardware alongside the PS3 hardware. Thus the very high price tag. The Following model "80 gig" dropped the hardware but instead has a very poor emulation layer for the PS2. So "some" PS2 games will play on it. PS3 up to the current Slim models can emulate a PS2 completely but SONY will not do this until PS2 sales drop which after 10 years, sales are still high.
ReplyDeleteyeah that memory card thing pissed me off! i kept downloading that backwards compatable software thing online thinking it would eventually work.
ReplyDeleteOrrr you could go to the playstation website they have a chart saying which ones are or are not backwards compatable
ReplyDeleteI have an 80GB with two USB ports that doesn't have backwards compatibility :(
ReplyDeleteDAMN U HAVE A OLD AS TV LOL
ReplyDelete@MrCallOfHonor Unfortunately, no they do not. Your PS3 is the one I had in this video (except for the different model number), it has an 80 GB hard drive, two USB ports and it lacks the chrome accents.
