why is that most pow wows are family run and it's those families that are the main contest winners at the end of the pow wow. why are the vendors just your average run of the mill people and most are not native at all. why aren't the tiny tots all winners instead of having 1,2,3places. these are just a few that i would like to know.

What about discussing WHO should dance, specifically, should non-Natives, in full regalia be welcomed. (Seems to me once you welcome one, 100 show up the next year.) This can also go into the hobby clubs, both within the US (like Order of the Arrow) and internationally (Germany, for instance) that put on pow wows where everyone is non-Native. I had the misfortune of walking into one of these when I was in college in Massachusetts. It made me ill.
ReplyDeleteWhat about discussing the dances themselves. There's been controversy over including medicine/prayer dances in pow wows. Dances that used to be exclusive to a tribe and used only for ceremonial purposes are now showing up at pow wows and being danced by others who don't know the history and or significance of the dance.
