ACCLES & POLLOCK- "Start of a Career" part 1






Accles & Pollock c.1965 Start of a Career A recruitment and training film made by Philip Hipkiss,a Training Officer with the company in 1965.He can be seen in the opening interview sequence (seated left) along with colleague and long time friend Ralph Gordon (seated right). The film begins with a prospective apprentice getting off the bus in Oldbury and walking to the factory along Rounds Green Road. We see his interview and a standard written test. Next,apprentices look at various processes throughout the factory. The film moves on to training undertaken at Oldbury College,featuring lectures and engineering practice. Recreational activities are shown such as the Apollo Club and visits to the companies own Nant Cottage in North Wales.A trip to Norway is also featured. The film ends with a succesful apprentice given the equipment for his new job in time study. The film premiered at the TI(Tube Investments) ballroom.It was accompanied by an Andre Segovia track and a live comentary.Later the film was dubbed by Bernard Miles.Sadly only the film footage remains. Accles & Pollock was a world renown tube engineering company.As part of the TI Group it's tube manufacturing and manipulating technology was utilized in many fields of engineering,from sports equipment(Apollo),furniture(PEL),automotive,aerospace and the nuclear industry to name a few.
