Does the Playstation 3 play playstation 1 games online?

I'm planning on purchasing a PS3 next month and I was wondering if I would be able to play old ps1 games against other gamers online.

    no the graphics are to good for ps1

    this mayne not be a good answer but i think it depends if u get the 40gb and 60gb

    it does play them but not online but i have ps3 and 360 and 360sucks so its worth the money buy ps3

    i got a ps3 60gb,i can play ps1 & ps2 games on it but not online.
