Is it free to play games online on Playstation Network?

I have an Xbox live right now and it is $8 a month, but is PSN free to play games online?
I mean play multiplayer games online with other people

    Yes, but you have to buy a Playstation 3. :P

    PSN is totally free, you just have to sign up.

    On an unrelated not, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for Wii is also free.
