What will be the appropriate response to "expected salary" even before the interview?

Question by Alexi: What will be the appropriate response to "expected salary" even before the interview?
Recently I applied for an IT job. The company has sent me a form, one of the fields include "expected salary".

What will be the appropriate response, should I really indicate the amount, or just negotiable?

I have not even been called up for interview!

Best answer:

Answer by not 2 B fooled
For now, just write "negotiable", then research what that job pays in your area; this will give you something to use as a salary for when you get the call for the interview :]

  1. I'll tell you why companies do this, may be that will help you decide how you want to answer. They do this to see if your expectations are in the same neighborhood as theirs. For example, if you say you are looking for a base salary of $60,000 and they are looking to hire someone in the $35,000 range, then you probably aren't the right fit, regardless of your skill level. Hope this helps.
