How can some conservatives complain about "big government" and praise domestic spying in the same breath?

Question by tangerine: How can some conservatives complain about "big government" and praise domestic spying in the same breath?
I just saw a question that included a link to a Newsweek article about Bush wanting to use spy satellites for domestic surveillance. Incredibly, I saw a few posts from some conservatives who had no problem with this! Amazingly, many conservatives who complain about "big government" also find ways to excuse or rationalize domestic spying and other infringements on our civil liberties. Am I the only one here who sees this as self-contradictory?

What happen when government "nationalizing" a sector say like banks what happen to investor?

Question by michel6119: What happen when government "nationalizing" a sector say like banks what happen to investor?
If the government "nationalizing"the banks will i as investor lose my money

Answer by vindevine
Well, to me there are several questions that need to be addressed before nationalization can seriously be considered.

They include what happens to the government guarantees of bank debt and whether both stockholders and preferred shareholders will be wiped out in a nationalization scenario.

"Unless and until those questions are answered, we cannot know to what extent taxpayers are at risk.

The fear and uncertainty about what comes next for the banks has sent shares of Citigroup and Bank of America down to 52-week lows. Shares of Citigroup recently recovered were down 20% at .01, while Bank of America shares have fallen 10% to .52.

Proponents of nationalization say the government would take control of the largest banks on a short-term basis in order to loosen lending and act as an implied guarantee to soothe customer concerns. But opponents note that nationalized banks might have an unfair advantage over banks that aren't under government control.

A possible scenario in which nationalization may make sense is if large institutional depositors cause a run on the banks by withdrawing their deposits.A depositor run is what ultimately pushed Wachovia into the arms of Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC), despite Wachovia having strong tier-one capital ratios at the time.

How much money exactly, in billions, did the US government "bailout" companies with?

Question by montmars: How much money exactly, in billions, did the US government "bailout" companies with?
How much money exactly, in billions, did the US government "bailout" companies with? And how much of that money is expected to be repaid by companies?

Best answer:

Answer by gosam777
That's hard to say. Last figures I've seen, is total bailout money is 8.5 Trillion. But 5.5 trillion of that is Federal Reserve money. The Fed is not a government agency, or government money.

Of the trillion government money around .2 trillion is Treasury Dept money. The majorly, around 0 billion, went to TARP. TARP is generally what is thought of as business bailout money.

Any money paid back to TARP, stays in the fund, is case of future need. So if and when it is recovered, it doesn't go beck into the Treasury until the program is dissolved.

The other .8 trillion government money, is combined FDIC, HUD, FHA, Freddie and Fannie, and other insurance based agency,. Most of that is money allocated to guarantee and back up loans Relatively little of the money represents direct outlays of cash with no strings attached, such as the 8 billion in stimulus checks mailed spring of 2008. Most of the money is going into loans or loan guarantees, asset purchases or stock investments on which the government could see some return.

How does "less government" and "more freedom" figure into brainwashing your kids with your beliefs?

Question by Viking Raider: How does "less government" and "more freedom" figure into brainwashing your kids with your beliefs?
The same group of people who seem to equate "less government" with "more freedom", seem to be the first to want to withold information and education from young people in favor of their own morality and religious upbringing. They are also the ones who seem to protest teachings of evolution and sex. They also seem to frown on independant and critical thought.

So how does brainwashing your kids and forcing them to believe what you believe, in any way shape or form make them, or society, free?

Please help me understand, I would appreciate your opinions. Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Scabs
its difficult to hold some similar ideas as others within "groups" and not go into this mode of sharing ALL similar ideas/beliefs. this goes for either side of the coin. parents instinctively want to instill similar values in their children ((their egos of sorts)). if we thought there were a better way to "be", to think, we would choose that. we all think were right and we all want our kids to continue a tradition of our own design.

as for this specific sect of society, i think a lot of them do fall into the aforementioned trap. i dont know that they all are as adament about all the issues they are pro/against. but its kind of the nature of "group-think", and we cannot dispute the validity of some ideas/beliefs, even if we dont choose to subscribe to them. as for the evolution and sex protests, a lot more "liberal" ((the target group youre referring to)) parents are opposed to teaching evolution because it is often very biased in either direction by the instructors personal feelings. plus we are not taught other religions conflicting world views in most science classes. these are taught more objectively in classes like "world history", which accounts for all religions equally. but i think a lot more "liberals" are pro-sex ed. its a lot of the bible-beaters that would prefer to live happily in denial that the "promise" rings their kids take in 9th grade ((vow of celebacy til marriage)) will deter them from having sex at some point. sex is a real part of high school, and sometimes even middle school. so its realistic to teach early.

i totally see your point though; i think we all need to be a little more open-minded and accepting of varying views, even if they come from a nearly identical genetic clone.
